The following article by Matt Hardesty, appeared in the December 1991 Guide to Muscle Cars.

“The 1991 NMCA World” by Matt Hardesty

The crowd rose quickly to its feet as the two ancient warriors barreled down the quarter-mile and screamed past the exhilarated crowds in the grandstand.  The massive ’62 Chevy 409 slammed through its gears with graceful vengeance, while a duplicate-year 421 Catalina kicked and clawed its way alongside the bow-tie.  Unable to even catch their breath from the last race, the fans were awed by the ground-pounding splendor of a Max Wedge 426 in a classic speed contest with the charismatic terror of a ’63 Galaxie 427.  And if reliving the early years of some of the most exciting drag racing wasn’t enough, muscle car drags, a car show, swap meet and manufacturers display row was also going on at the National Muscle Car Association’s World Finals at Memphis Motorsports Park in Memphis, Tennessee.

Imagine being able to relive the muscle-car era from beginning to end, complete with a cruise night, drag racing and a classic car show.  The NMCA had it all September 14 and 15.  For many young participants the muscle car wars had been restarted, and every racer involved was totally serious.  The sweltering heat on Saturday and Sunday precluded the contestants making their fastest passes, but the action was still feverishly fast.  1969 had come back to Memphis Motorsports Park!

Sunday started and ended with exciting race action and tough car show competition.  The Super Stock nostalgia cars roared several times that afternoon, followed by along list of competitive race cars in nine different classes, ranging from Pure Stock Eliminator to Pro Muscle.  By the end of the day, the list of tough race competitors was finally whittled down to the remaining overall champions.

The drag racing ceased late Sunday afternoon, and the roar from both the racing and the crowd faded into a distant echo.  Car-show goes packed away their new awards and trophies, cranked up the muscle cars and ambled toward the gate.  We sat back and relaxed at the far side of the car show area, taking in the view.  It seemed obvious how successful the show was and hot it would be even better next year.  Some shows seem to have it all, especially when they end under a Tennessee sunset, with the quiet thunder of American muscle filling the air.  See you next year.

       By Dave Campbell

Well here we are again…Race cars are in the garage awaiting new parts or just covered and waiting for the 1992 season.  The Midwest Nostalgia Super Stock Association Chairman, Rick Johnson, is busy putting together information for our upcoming season.

Rick is currently in negotiations with the National Muscle Car Association for a 4 race series.  Preliminary rules and regulations are being studied by both groups to see if an agreement can be reached.

By now you should have received your reminder to pay your 1992 dues along with a copy of our rules and National Muscle Car Association’s rules.  Our Chairman needs your input. . . so, set right down now and express your views.  If there is something that you don’t understand about any of rules/negotiations or anything else, give me or Rick a call and we’ll be glad to clarify anything if we can.  Remember, we can’t read your mind, so let the Chairman and the Board of Directors know what you are thinking.  We need all the help, suggestions and ideas we can get.

Events. . .Etc. . .

As most of you know, our group along with some other racers from the East-Southeast region, were invited to the National Muscle Car Association meet in Memphis, Tennessee on September 14 and 15.  The purpose of this show was for the NMCA to look  for a group of nostalgia cars interested in running a 4 race series for 1992 as mentioned before.  According to reports ye editor received, our group put on a helluva good show and apparently made a positive impression on the NMCA (as their chairman contacted Rick to assist him in setting up some rules and regulations and money payout to try and be fair to everyone).  Bear in mind anyone can enter this series of races as long as they can pass the rules and the NMCA tech inspection.  If this becomes a reality, the dates will be as follows:

               May 16-17           Houston, Texas

               June 20-21           Milan, Michigan

               August 29-30       Maple Grove, Pennsylvania

              September 19-20   Memphis, Tennessee

We continue our monthly excerpts from Dave Campbell’s history compilation of the Nostalgia Super Stock Inc.   Note in the first paragraph under “Events”, Dave has highlighted the last sentence where the Club received a Choice Award from VRA.

 From the driver’s seat

By Dave Campbell

On July 19, 20, 21 the Super Ford Extravaganza was held at Milan, Michigan with yours truly and several members of our organization invited to attend.  The Southeast Michigan Chapter of Performance Ford Club of America hosted the nostalgia portion of the show.  MNSSA members Robert Travarro and Dennis Kolodziej were in charge of handling the details.  The weather was HOT, 97 degrees, with track temps around 107 but that didn’t stop the action.  Approximately 15 of the finest nostalgia Fords including 4 members of our club (along with some foreign competition…Pontiacs, Chevy’s, Mopars, etc.) were present to run for the money.  Each day was a dial your own ET which ranged from 10:30’s to 12:80’s.  The host club put on a great show that was well prepared with good announcers and excellent track conditions.  I made several new acquaintances including three members of our own organization who own Ford Thunderbolts; Robert Travarro, Dennis Kolodziej and Don Snyder.  Also, I met Ross Martin, a photographer from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada whom we hope will be influential in booking our group at some tracks with which he is involved.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that on Saturday, Dennis Kolodziej with his Ford Thunderbolt won first place money with Rick Johnson in his “No Sponsor” Pontiac coming in second.  Sunday, Rick bettered himself and took the first place money with “Lightweight Bob” and his 63 ½  Fastback coming in second.

Needless to say, our group was well represented at the Super Ford Extravaganza.  I would like to take this time to personally thank Robert Travarro, Dennis Kolodziej, the Southwest Michigan Chapter of Performance Ford Club of America and the Milan Dragway personnel for a great weekend of racing…Thanks again guys…….Dave.

 Events….Etc…….

Good Guys Happening ’91 was held at Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP) on August 9, 10, 11.  A great weekend was had by all, the weather was beautiful and the Good Guys showed that they were a class organization with over 2,500 Street Rods, 400 Nostalgia Racers, Willy’s Coupes/Sedans and Studebaker Coupes/Sedans in attendance.  MNSSA got a lot of recognition and was the recipient of the Vintage Racing Association (VRA) Choice Award for Best Nostalgia Group.

Bruce Fulper from Grand Terrace California, Editor of the Pontiac 421 Club Performance Magazine was in attendance; wrenching for Rick Johnson and was also able to make some passes behind the wheel of some potent Pontiacs.  When Bruce was not doing passes, he was shooting still and video pictures of everything in sight.  When the editing is finished, there will be some great shots available…Thanks Bruce!

A new “Midwest Super Stock” banner was pictured.  Russ and Susan Campbell were recipients of special thanks from the group for getting the banner made.

 From the driver’s seat

Our first event has come and gone and a good time was had by all in spite of the weather.

We had 14 members in attendance with 11 race cars.  We arrived Saturday morning in the rain which continued until around noon when the sun finally came out.  With the sun out the humidity went SKY HIGH and ET’s went down for most racers.

Sunday morning dawned dry and sunny, but it had rained during the night so the track had to be dried before the trials could begin.  However, everyone did have an opportunity to make some runs to check out the track and their equipment.  ET’s were much better as the air was drier.

Finally after the Teeny-Weeny Bikini contest and other pre-race festivities were over about 3:00 P.M., it was time to go racing!  Our group was scheduled right after Arnie “The Farmer” Beswick and Ron Slope who drove one of Sox and Martin’s barracudas (the MOPAR lunched a motor on the starting line).  Arnie ran a 9.91 on a single.

Then it was our turn.  We now had 10 cars as Larry Kaufman burnt a piston in the “War Chief” Pontiac during Sunday morning trials.  The motor on Russ Campbell’s ’62 Chevy bubbletop went sour on the first run and Ray Bisig's

Tempest blew the clutch.  Second round saw Joey Zajac’s ’63 Catalina “Rompin Redskin” lose oil pressure in the staging lanes and Jim Whittenburg’s ’63 Ford “Precious Metal” break the trans-tail shaft on the line.

The last round finished with 6 cars working in a wind chill that was about 20 degrees…everyone about froze.

Events…Etc…

As of this writing there are no events scheduled.  Our chairman has been in contact with several promoters regarding our program…but so far no takers.

We do, however, have a tentative date in September at Gateway again for the same promoter (Len Grecco) but he has stipulated G.M. cars only as he is calling this race the G.M. Nationals.

Volume 1                             April 7,  1991            Issue #1

 From the driver’s seat

Welcome to a new organization named the Midwest Nostalgia Super Stock Association.    The purpose of this organization is to provide a program for the promoters and fans and at the same time have fun doing it.  No more stomp on the throttle then stomp on the brakes or electronic gadgets to put up with.  I am sure you know what I am talking about!

Our purpose will be to provide a program that the promoter will want to have return to his track and will recommend to other promoters.  This will also provide a program that the fans will like because they are the ones who ultimately pay the bills.  If we don’t do the two things I previously mentioned, we will be History, along with our car, which brings me to another point.  This organization was formed so that we, a group of people who are interested in nostalgia-type racing, (hopefully with everyone’s help) will be able to book some races so that everyone has an opportunity to attend.  At this time we have 21 members, therefore, some will not be able to participate because the promoter will only pay for a set number of cars agreed upon prior to race day.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors will be responsible for contacting those members who are selected to attend each event.  The chairman will also attempt to get free entry for anyone who wishes to bring his car and participate for fun.  After all, that is why we are doing this in the first place. . . for fun, no fighting, feuding or fussing.  If anyone has a problem, put that problem on paper and send it to the Chairman of the Board and he will take it up with the Board and try to resolve it to everyone’s satisfaction.

A brochure with each racer’s picture and information about him and our organization is being mailed to selected promoters in the Midwest so they can see what we have to offer.  Information concerning future dates will be sent to you as it becomes available.

Events . . . Etc. . .

Our first scheduled event is at Gateway International Raceway in the St. Louis area on May 4th and 5th.  As soon as you have been notified that you have been selected to attend; or if you are to selected and want to attend for free entry (for car, driver and one crew person), motel reservations are available at the Holiday Inn in Collinsville, IL.  Price is $45.00 a night and be sure to mention that you are with Len Greco Promotions to get that price.  If you have any questions call our Chairman, Rick Johnson.

The following article appeared in Muscle Cars, September 1990 issue.  “Horsepower Invades St. Louis” by Wayne Scraba, stated that the separation of this third annual event from the previous events was the horsepower—three L-88 Corvettes, a ’65 Cobra and a ’67 427 Fairlane.  The event was attended by 7-8,000 spectators and has $10,000+ of prize money.  “The dash for the cash could best be described as warfare in the trenches, but when all of the tire smoke had cleared, one of Tim Thorpe’s Corvettes had turned a best elapsed time of 12.2 seconds in the 1320 at a whopping 118 miles per hour.  And that was on street tires with the exhaust system corked!”

Featured in the article with pictures were Russ Campbell and his ’62 Chevrolet post and Jim Whittenburg and his ’63 Ford.  Rick Johnson and his ’62 Super Duty paired with the ’61  409 owned by Don Shaffer.  Mike Riefer, owner of the ’63 Max wedge paired with Dave Campbell in his ’63 409 Biscayne (Faded Memories).  Scraba goes on to say, regarding Campbell and Riefer, “both vintage racers ran in the special Super Stock eliminator, but with acts like this, memories of the old factory drag strip wars will live forever—faded or not!

1991 (Dave Campbell sums up the groups activities for the year.)

By this time word was getting around about our group.  The magazine article in Muscle Car magazine, along with Len Greco promoting our race cars, other racers became interested in what we were doing.

Our first race was for Len at Gateway on May 4-5, 1991.  the next race, we were invited to attend the Super Ford Extravaganza held at Milan Dragway in Milan, Michigan on July 19-21, 1991.

August 9-11, 1991, we were invited to participate in the Good Guys Hot Rod Happening in Indianapolis, IN at IRP.  (2008 will be our 18th year at Good Guys Indy).

Russ Smiltniek purchased the National Muscle Car Association (NMCA) from Chuck Green who started the organization.  In 1989 Russ called Rick to see if our group would come to Memphis Motorsports Park in Memphis, TN to participate in the MNCA World Finals on September 14-15, 1991.  Our group along with some racers out of the Southeast did some match racing exhibition style that weekend.  The NMCA organization wanted to see our cars to see if they wanted to start a class for Nostalgia Super Stock Race Cars.

 1989 Nostalgia Movement

The Nostalgia movement began in May of 1989 when Russ Campbell called and asked if I would join him at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis, for an exhibition match race for Len Greco a promoter out of Fenton, MO.  Len started promoting “Muscle from the Past” shows.  Russ had a ’62 409 Chevy and a friend of his also had a ’62.  That event was where we met Rick Johnson and his ’62 Pontiac.  The four of us did some match racing that day for Len.

1989 National Muscle Car Association (NMCA)

In August of 1989 Emma and I, along with several other 60’s race cars, traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to do some exhibition runs for the NMCA.  This was a newly formed organization owned by Chuck Green.

The following magazine articles with pictures covered the event:

Sept/Oct issue 1989 “Fast Class” Magazine (NMCA), ‘The 409s’ by Robert Bravender.   This article featured Jim Goodwyn’s ’62 Belair, The Murphy’s ’62 Belair,  Jim Jones’ ’62 Chevy Biscayne, Dave Campbell’s ’63 Belair, and Ron Kukuruda’s ’67 Hemi Belvedere.

Dec issue 1989 “Super Street Machine” Magazine, ‘HI-PO Show’.   Pictured in this article were Ken Dvorak’s ’67 Ford Fairlane XL 427, Dave Campbell’s ’63 Belair, and a ’63 Dodge Ramcharger convertible powered by a 426, owned by Mike Davis.  (Dave says that it is the only Max Wedge light weight convertible from the factory that he knows of, left in existence.)  As the article states, “The beauty of the NMCA is its ability to attract both the old and the new.  …It’s watching the old shoebox racers thundering down the quarter-mile for a taste of yesteryear.  It’s two buddies getting together to exchange information and bench race.  Being a member of the NMCA is all these things.”

1990 Midwest Nostalgia Super Stock Association

During the winter of 1989, Len Greco called Rick Johnson and asked if he thought he could put together eight or ten 60’s style race cars for exhibition match racing for his show on June 5-6, 1990, at Gateway.

Rick called me and together we succeeded in getting enough cars together for a show.  Len Greco was impressed enough with our group, that he invited us to Kansas City International Raceway (KCIR) for an event held on July 28-29, 1990.

It was at this event a meeting was held at Dave and Emma’s house to discuss the possibility of forming a group of racers to do heads up style match racing which became known as the “Midwest Nostalgia Super Stock Association” (MNSSA).

A lot of credit goes to Len Greco for promoting our group as he really liked our cars, the quality of our cars, and he liked how we conducted ourselves.  He was able to get us in magazines, he put us on his fliers, and he put us on the map.  From that point forward our group was the forerunner of Nostalgia Super Stock Match Racing or a form of Nostalgia racing as I remember.

Muscle Cars, Sept 1990, covered the Gateway International Raceway event.  The article, ‘Horsepower invades St. Louis’, by Wayne Scraba featured several cars.  As Wayne Scraba indicated, “Toss 500 musclecars into a bull ring in St. Louis, mix in $10,000-plus of prize money and then throw in 7-8,000 spectators and you know something is going to happen.”
