Driver
Dave Campbell, 68, retired from General Motors Leeds Plant in Kansas City, MO. After a short time of racing a Chevy II from 1968 through 1971 for AHRA with class wins in Green Valley, TX, Tulsa, OK and numerous class wins at Kansas City International Raceway. In 1988 the racing bug bit me again so I built the 409 and we are still racing.
History
In 1986, while on vacation in Nashville, TN, We purchased a 1963 Chevrolet Bel-Air Tudor Sedan, with 44,000 miles, a 6 cylinder. Engine and a Power glide transmission. The intention was to put together a 409 to replace the 6 cylinder engine. Much like the ones I worked on at the GM Plant and grew up with. Emma and I owned a brand new 1963 SS 409 4 speed. Before that we owned a 1958 Bel-Air, 348 power glide. The “W” engine was always a fascinating engine because of its design. In 1988 my dream came true. We finally put together a 409 drawing upon the memory of how we put them together at the plant in 1963. From that point on Nostalgia Super Stock Racing and “Faded Memories” became a reality.
Technical
The 409 engine made up of some rat motor and after market parts now sports 482 cu. in. The transmission is a turbo 400 with a trans brake/12 bolt Chevy rear end with spool and axles and a 4:56 gear, running on 9X30 slicks.
Performance
1/4 mile times, I run consistently 10:50’s with a best of 10:42 at 127 MPH. 1/8 mile times 6:60 at 101 MPH with a best of 6:54 at 102 MPH. 60’ times in the low 1.40’s with a best of 1.39 on 9” tires.
