N/SS Profile

Rex Longworth

Doomsday Dodge N/SS #L527

Summary

The “Doomsday Dodge” was born after nearly 3 years of conversion from street to a dedicated race car.

OWNERS and SPONSORS

Owned by Rex and Glenda Longworth of Butler MO. Sponsored by Longworth German Shepherds.com.  Our breed stock is from imported European champions, all litters are hand-raised quality dogs.

DRIVER

Rex Longworth retired Boilermaker, heli-arc welder, high rigger and boiler mechanic, drives and maintains the Doomsday Dodge with the help of Todd Sperry my crew chief.

HISTORY

Our car was freshly restored when purchased in 2000. A Coronet 500, 383,4-speed with an 8 ¾ rear. We showed the car early on and soon realized that was not for us, sitting on the sideline didn't get it! The car set in the garage a few years till in 2003 when I returned to the drag strip, as a spectator and knew what I had to do!  Work started in 2006 and we were on the track in 2008.

TECHNICAL

The engine is a 1966 440HP block, stock steel 1966 crank, flat tappet cam, Edelbrock heads, intake, and carbs. A special Thanks to Gerald Griffin, owner of “Griff's Cam Shop”; Billings, MO. 727 trans, built by Todd Sperry with A and A parts.  Dana 60 rear-end full of Strange Eng. Parts, narrowed and built by owner. This car was entirely built in our shop { except the long block }. A very special “Thank You” to Thumper Sparks ( my long time welding partner and friend) for his help installing the roll- cage, and 4-link suspension, “we always get it done”.

Performance

N/SS D 11.50 index. Best time 11.18 @ 120

Achievements

N/SS D class runner-up at the 2008 Monster Mopar Event

Results

This car is beyond measure in what it's done for me, after having a traumatic brain injury from a job related accident in 1997, building this car has been a total therapy project for myself helping me regain many lost skills. At this point I should tell you I meet Tom Boehm at (KCIR) Kansas City International Raceway in 2003,without his Friendship and Motivation I couldn't have built the car (“ I tell everyone it's all his fault!) And then there is my wife Glenda who never gave up on me when life really kicked the stuffing right out of me! But in the end I'm doing something most people just dream of. See ya at the track!!!!
